In many regards, the villages are the exact opposite to the rest of the city: streets are quiet and empty most of the time, houses are spacious, surrounded by trees and little gardens, the air is fresher, and many communities provide public spaces like playgrounds and sporting areas.
Many foreigners may in the beginning be disconcerted by the excluding character of these neighbourhoods, as the subdivisions are usually surrounded by walls, and guards patrol at the entry gates. Nevertheless, the mentioned advantages and the sense of security which the village provides easily convince many expatriates of renting or buying a house there, especially if they stay in Manila with family.
The level of security varies from village to village. If you are not a resident, it is common that guards ask who you want to visit in the subdivision. In some villages, an advance notice or a confirming phone call to the host is necessary. Some communities allow cabs and even registered tricycles to enter, others let in only vehicles with a car sticker which shows that the owner is a resident of the place. All gated communities are closed for transit traffic, which actually adds to Manila's bad traffic situation.

Established in the 1940s, Forbes Park is one of the oldest and most prestigious gated communities of Metro Manila.
House and lot prices in this subdivision are slightly lower than those located in the adjacent Forbes Park. But it is just as prestigious.
Bel-Air is regularly voted the cleanest and greenest barangay (neighborhood) in Makati City. The subdivision is known for its good community life, with numerous cultural events and festivities throughout the year. The Green Meadows is one of numerous subdivisions in Quezon City, in the norhern part of Metro Manila. It is located near the boundary of Pasig City. Green Meadows is accessible via C5, Ortigas Avenue or Edsa-Temple Drive. Facilities include a clubhouse, function rooms, tennis and basketball courts, a swimming pool, a park and playground.
