Metro Manila · Miss Earth 2013
The annual Miss Earth contest is one of the three big international beauty pageants, along with Miss World and Miss Universe. Usually held in Manila, the event does not only celebrate beauty but wants to raise environmental awareness as well. Miss Earth 2013 will be crowned on December 7.
Angelee Claudett de los Reyes, who was crowned Miss Philippines Earth in the Mall of Asia Arena in May, will try to win the title of Miss Earth for her country. Every year, 80 to 90 candidates from all over the world compete for the crown, with swimsuit and evening gown competitions, and interviews without make-up where they proof their environmental knowledge.
Also part of the program are tree planting missions, environmental seminars, and presentations of the best eco-tourism spots. The new Miss Earth will be spokesperson of the Miss Earth Foundation, the UN Environment Program, and other environmental organizations for one year.
Beauty pageants are big events in the Philippines. Groups of friends gather in the evening or even in the middle of the night to watch the shows on TV. Their popularity has been further boosted recently because Philippine candidates were pretty successful over the last years. The Filipina Megan Young was crowned Miss World 2013, and her compatriot Ariella Arida is 3rd runner up in the 2013 Miss Universe contest.
