Kota Kinabalu is a fast-growing Malaysian city of roughly 620,000 people, located at the northern coast of the island of Borneo. It offers everything you can expect from a tropical holiday destination: beautiful beaches, great food, and exciting nature parks just around the corner.

OK, we are not in the Philippines anymore when we relax in Kota Kinabalu. But as this popular tourist destination is less than a two-hour flight away from Manila, we included it in our travel section anyway. Air Asia flies daily from NAIA Terminal 4 to Kota Kinabalu. Cebu Pacific flies three times a week from Terminal 3.

And here is what to do in KK, as the city is also called:

1. Go island hopping and enjoy lonely beaches on the nearby islands. If you want to safe money, just buy a ticket for one of the regular ferries.

2. Go to a market and try the food. KK is full of wet markets, night markets, and Sunday markets. Choose some freshly caught seafood at the markets by the sea and have it grilled right away.

3. Go to the jungle. KK is surrounded by forests, natural preserves, and wildlife sanctuaries. Most famous is the Kinabalu Park, a world heritage site where you can stroll through the jungle paths or climb Mount Kinabalu. But careful, the second option is only recommended for people in good health, as the hike takes two to three days and it can get pretty chilly and windy at an altitude of 4000 meters.
