Metro Manila · The Underground River (Palawan)
Palawan Island was voted as the most beautiful island in the world by Conde Nast readers. Would you like to go to the island while you are in the country? Take a look at this guide.
Palawan Island was recently voted as the most beautiful island in the world, according to a survey done by Conde Nast. If you would like to visit the island, it is a good idea to pass by the subterranean river.
Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the must-visit places in the Philippines. The UNESCO World Heritage site may very well be the world's longest navigable underground river.
Travelers going to this river would have to take a 1-2 hour van ride from Puerto Princesa to get to the pier. From there, you will have to ride a banca (wooden boat) for half an hour.
Aside from going to the underground river destination by boat, tourists also have the option to trek through the forest. This, however, is the longer route but it is a scenic walk. It will take several hours to get to your destination so be sure to wake up early if you plan on trekking.
Once you arrive at the underground river destination, you can already see that it puts special emphasis on being a prime eco tourist destination - a label that is becoming more and more popular across the country.
A boatsman will take you on your journey into the mountain. He will tell you the names of the rock formations ('corn cob', 'Holy Family', 'Sharon Stone'). Most of the boatmen have lots of stories about the river but while the stories are fascinating, the river is more fascinating that it is almost magical.
Puerto Princessa is one of the aspiring tourist destinations in the country and the world.
The easiest way to get from Manila to Palawan is by plane. From Puerto Princesa, the island capital, ask your local hotel or hostel for a tour package. Almost all tourist accommodations offer such packages which include round trip to the pier via van, lunch on the beach, and a tourist guide who will take care of your group. During peak season it is advisable to arrange the trip beforehand through a travel agency or tour operator.
Travel advisory: Entry to the Underground River is limited to 900 visitors per day. Tickets have to be secured beforehand at the Underground River Booking Office.
