The National Theater opened its doors to the public in the year 1969. Today, it still serves as one of the most important theaters in the metro.

The National Theater, located inside the Cultural Center of the Philippines, is a major entertainment venue in the metropolis. Because of the structure’s indigenous influences and it being a work of National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, the National Theater is an important cultural landmark in the Philippines. Construction of the place started in 1966 and opened its doors in 1969.

The theater’s architecture is built on a large podium. Once visitors reach the main lobby, one would see three Capiz shell chandeliers hanging from the ceiling of the third floor - symbolizing the three geographical divisions of the tropical country: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The National Theater houses three performing arts venues. This includes the Nicanor Abelardo Theater with a seating capacity of 1,821; the Aurelio Tolentino Theater, also referred to as the Little Theater, which seats 421 guests; and the Huseng Batute Theater, a studio theater that seats 250 people. The main theater –the Nicanor Abelardo Theater- seats people in four levels. It has an Orchestra level, boxes, and two balconies. This theater was designed to make room for sound requirements of various performances and can typically host operatic performances without further amplification. It is also often the venue for orchestra performances. The Aurelio Tolentino Theater, on the other hand, was built for drama performances, solo recitals, chamber music, film screenings, and lectures. The Huseng Batute Theater is often utilized for smaller performances. It has ample space for an acting area.
