Metro Manila · Artistic City Tours with Carlos Celdran
Guided city tours seem boring and exhausting, especially in the hardly pedestrian-friendly City of Manila? The theatrical tours of artist and notorious cultural activist Carlos Celdran prove the opposite.
Celdran's unique combination of witty theatrical performances, sassy jokes and straight facts became increasingly popular over the last decade. On his Intramuros tours, the 39-year-old multi-talent uses costumes, music, comedy and street theater to provide an ironic overview of the Philippines' history and present, emphasizing in particular the country's role in arts, culture and international geopolitics.
His new show „Living la Vida Imelda“ about former dictator Marcos' glamorous wife was praised even by the New York Times, which called it a „delicious mix of history, gossip and social commentary“. Celdran leads the participants of this performance tour to the CCP and other prestigious objects of the Marcos era. The pompous but now partly run-down structures of the time form the appropriate scenery for Cendral's chitchat about the scandals and often hilarious rumors that surround Imelda Marcos until today.
Carlos Celdran is also a well-know and controversial activist who is often asked by the media for his opinion on the latest political and cultural issues. In 2010, he entered Manila Cathedral to protest against Church opposition to the reproductive health bill. Dressed as Jose Rizal, he shouted "Stop getting involved in politics!" before police arrested him. Because of this he was sentenced to imprisonment of up to one year in January 2013. Celdran filed an appeal, though, and - at least for now - everybody interested in the history of Manila and the Philippines can still enjoy his extraordinary performances.
